Preparing Your Skin For Cooler Weather

The arrival of fall means cooler temperatures and it might mean it’s also time to give your skincare routine a little refresh. Dry fall air and indoor heating can affect your skin’s moisture, which can lead to dry and flaky skin. Here are some simple tips we recommend to help your skin stay glowing all fall and winter long.

Upgrade Your Moisturizer

A lightweight moisturizer is perfect for the summer but going into cooler weather, you might need something a little richer. As the air gets cooler and more dry, your skin will crave hydration. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides to nourish your skin. If you have acne-prone skin, using a richer hydrator doesn’t automatically mean more breakouts. Keeping your skin properly balanced with the right moisturizer can help prevent them. Your esthetician can recommend a product that provides the hydration you need without clogging pores or triggering irritation.

Add a Facial Oil

Adding in a facial oil will help lock in moisture and protect your skin from the cold dry air. Not only will an oil nourish and help repair your barrier, but most oils are packed with nutrients that can soothe your skin and keep it balanced and healthy. When choosing a facial oil for winter, look for ingredients like jojoba oil and squalane for lightweight hydration that won’t clog pores, while rosehip and argan oil provide deep moisture and are rich in vitamins to brighten and protect your skin. For soothing irritated or sensitive skin, evening primrose and sea buckthorn oil offer anti-inflammatory benefits, and marula oil helps boost elasticity and repair damage.

Don’t Skip the SPF

It’s easy to forget about SPF when the days get colder and cloudier, but UV rays are still affecting your skin. Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of skin damage, so keeping up with your daily SPF is a must. You can even choose a sunscreen that has added moisturizing benefits to give your skin that extra boost in one step.

Add a Humidifier to your Home Once the heater kicks on, indoor air can quickly become dry, which pulls moisture from your skin. Investing in a humidifier helps maintain the air’s moisture balance, creating a more skin-friendly environment. Place one in your bedroom or living area, and your skin will thank you with a plumper, more hydrated appearance.

Drink More Water

We can’t forget that it’s not just external factors that affect your skin. Everything you consume has an impact as well. Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water will help your skin stay moisturized. If you aren’t a big water drinker, add in some cucumber or lemon to keep it fresh!

Treat Yourself to a Service

Getting regular facials, especially in the fall and winter months can make a big difference in keeping your skin healthy and balanced. Your esthetician will assess your skin’s current condition and customize treatments to address seasonal concerns and they can also recommend personalized products that will help you combat the drying effects of cooler weather, keeping your skin glowing all season long.
