PDO Threads vs. Fillers: Choosing the Right Treatment for You

PDO threads and fillers are both great options when it comes to non surgical procedures. Wondering which treatment is best for you? While both treatments offer amazing results, they serve different purposes and are best suited for specific candidates. Let's break it down!

What Are PDO Threads:

PDO threads are made from a special suture called Polydioxanone which is a biodegradable material. These super-thin threads are absorbable and work wonders by lifting and firming up sagging skin. They do this by kickstarting collagen production, which gives you firmer and more youthful-looking skin. Here's the lowdown on PDO threads:

The Ideal Candidate for PDO Threads:

  • Mild to Moderate Sagging: PDO threads are excellent for individuals with mild to moderate skin sagging, especially in areas like the cheeks, jowls and neck.

  • Aging Skin: Candidates looking to address the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and loose skin, can benefit from PDO threads as well as neurotoxins.

  • Non-Surgical Facelift: PDO threads are often referred to as a non-surgical facelift. If you desire a more lifted and youthful appearance without going under the knife, PDO threads are a suitable option.

  • Minimal Downtime: Those seeking minimal downtime and a quick recovery typically opt for PDO threads, as the procedure is less invasive than surgery.

What Are Fillers:

The secret ingredient in most fillers is hyaluronic acid. Fillers add volume and definition to specific areas of the face. Here's what you need to know about fillers:

Ideal Candidate for Fillers:

  • Volume Loss: Fillers are ideal for candidates experiencing volume loss in areas like the cheeks, lips and nasolabial folds (smile lines).

  • Plump Lips: Many individuals seek fillers to achieve fuller, plumper lips.

  • Jaw and Chin Definition: If you’re looking to contour and add a more sculpted look to your jaw and chin, you would be an ideal candidate.

  • Immediate Results: Fillers provide immediate results, making them a popular choice for those looking for instant gratification.

Key Differences:

  • Purpose: PDO threads are primarily used for lifting and tightening sagging skin, while fillers add volume, plumpness and definition to specific areas.

  • Duration of Results: PDO thread results typically last around 6-12 months, while fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used.

  • Procedure Time: PDO thread insertion typically takes about 30 minutes while filler injections take about 45 minutes to an hour.

  • Recovery: PDO threads may involve some mild swelling and bruising, with a recovery period of 2 weeks. Fillers may have minimal downtime but can cause temporary swelling and bruising as well.

  • Collagen Stimulation: PDO threads stimulate collagen production, which can lead to longer-term improvements in skin quality. Most fillers, with the exception of Sculptra®, do not have the same collagen-stimulating effect. Sculptra®, which is made of poly-L-lactic acid, and does not contain HA, does stimulates collagen.

Choosing between PDO threads and fillers boils down to your unique needs and goals. The key is booking a consultation with one of our skilled injectors to figure out your best path. Sometimes, a mix of both PDO threads and fillers might be the winning combo for your dream results. And don't forget, things like age, skin type, and overall health also have a say in the beauty game.
